MINEBEA MITSUMI Inc.
U-Shin, a Member of MinebeaMitsumi Group, Concluded Agreement
with Kure City on the Use of Facility as a Community Shelter during Disasters
U-Shin Ltd. (Headquarters: Tokyo; Representative Director, CEO: Masaru Kawano; hereinafter "U-Shin"), a member of the MinebeaMitsumi Group, concluded an "Agreement on the Use of Facility as a Community Shelter during Disasters" with Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture (hereinafter "Kure City") on June 12, 2026.
The Tenno district of Kure City (including Tennofukuura-cho and Tennodenjubara-cho) faces extremely high risks of sediment disasters and storm surges, making the securing of shelters critically important. However, existing shelters, such as Kure Portopia and the Tenno Community Center, presented challenges due to the difficulty of evacuation for elderly residents and others with limited mobility. Therefore, in response to strong requests from local residents, U-Shin's Hiroshima Plant—which is adjacent to the target areas and accessible directly by car—will be utilized as a community shelter.
In the past, during the Heavy Rain of July 2018 (triggered by Typhoon No.12), nearby elementary schools and community centers were damaged. At the request of Kure City, U-Shin opened its cafeteria building as a shelter and accommodated 115 residents. Since introducing its Business Continuity Plan (BCP) last year, U-Shin engaged in ongoing discussions with Kure City regarding community collaboration, ultimately paving the way for this agreement.
Details of the Shelter Agreement
U-Shin will provide its Hiroshima Plant as a community shelter with the following details:
- Target Districts: Tennofukuura-cho and Tennodenjubara-cho
- Facility: Cafeteria building and other designated spaces of the U-Shin Hiroshima Plant
- Anticipated Disasters: Floods, typhoons, and other disasters (excluding tsunamis)
Comments from Both Parties
Mayor Yoshiake Shinhara of Kure City
"I would like to express my deepest gratitude to U-Shin for allowing local residents to use a portion of their plant facilities as a community shelter during disasters. During the Heavy Rain of July 2018, U-Shin graciously opened its doors to serve as a shelter in response to requests from local residents. The Tenno district (including Fukuura-cho and Denjubara-cho) faces exceptionally high risks of sediment disasters and storm surges, making the securing of shelters an absolute priority. Furthermore, disaster recovery public housing is located right next to the U-Shin Hiroshima Plant. Having a shelter right before their eyes will undoubtedly bring a great sense of reassurance to the residents. As Kure City dedicates its full efforts to disaster countermeasures, this agreement is tremendously encouraging."
Masaru Kawano, Representative Director, CEO of U-Shin Ltd.
"It is a great honor and deeply meaningful for our company to conclude this agreement. In response to the challenge where existing shelters are far away, making evacuation difficult for elderly residents and others, we will provide our Hiroshima Plant as a shelter. Having accommodated 115 residents during the Heavy Rain of July 2018, we recognize that contributing to the safety and peace of mind of the local community is an important mission. One of the major pillars of our management policy is to 'contribute to the local community.' In line with this policy, we intend to flexibly adapt and contribute not only to flood countermeasures but also during various other types of disasters. Moving forward, we will maintain a flawless state of preparedness and further deepen our cooperation with Kure City."
