MITSUMI ELECTRIC CO., LTD. of the MinebeaMitsumi Group
Commences Use of Solar Power by Self-Consignment*1 at the Chitose Business Division
- First semiconductor factory in Japan*2 to use renewable energy for production activities -

The MITSUMI ELECTRIC CO., LTD. Chitose Business Division (Chitose City, Hokkaido; hereinafter referred to as "Chitose Factory") of the MinebeaMitsumi Group has commences use of solar-generated electric power procured through self-consignment in its semiconductor factory production activities, becoming the first plant in Japan to do so.

Established 40 years ago, the Chitose Factory is the MinebeaMitsumi Group's largest semiconductor factory in Japan, and the only semiconductor preprocessing factory in Hokkaido.
With the support of Japan Renewable Energy Corporation (Registered Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Kazuhiro Takeuchi; hereinafter referred to as "JRE"), five large-scale solar power generation systems will be installed in Hokkaido. The electric power generated at these five sites will be used for semiconductor manufacturing at the Chitose Factory through self-consignment, thereby reducing both costs and CO2 emissions.
At the Chitose Factory, peak electricity consumption is planned to be fully supplied using solar power produced by the large-scale solar power generation systems, which will commence operation in sequence starting this month. Once the systems have fully commenced operation, the five sites are expected to generate approximately 16.7 GWh of capacity in total. This will be the largest installation of solar power generation systems for a single demand location to have taken place in Hokkaido*3, as well as the largest procurement within the MinebeaMitsumi Group (in terms of electric power capacity), and it is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 9,029 t-CO2 per year.
Additionally, World Kinect Corporation (Registered Head Office: Florida, USA; Japan Branch Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) participated as an advisor in the planning and commencement of operations for this project.

Based on the Group's Environmental Policy, MinebeaMitsumi is promoting a 30% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with the fiscal year ended March 2021 by the fiscal year ending March 2031, and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. In order to achieve these, we consider to take various initiatives, including the introduction of solar power generation systems at our company's bases around the world and enhancing our initiatives on decarbonization and the reduction of environmental burden.

Aiming at our corporate philosophy "To contribute to realization of a sustainable, eco-friendly and prosperous society by providing better products, at a faster speed, in larger numbers, at a lower cost and by smarter means," we will continue to strive to further expand the use of renewable energy and build a sustainable society.

  • *1 Self-consignment: A method of supplying electricity, in which electricity generated by facilities maintained and operated by a company are supplied internally to other company facilities through a power transmission and distribution network
  • *2 First semiconductor preprocessing factory production activities using solar power to take place in Japan (according to World Kinect Corporation)
  • *3 Hokkaido's largest solar power generation system installation for a single demand location (according to JRE)
