Minebea and OSAKI Electric Agree to Jointly Develop Technologies for Smart City Plan in Phnom Penh, Kingdom of Cambodia

Tokyo, November 5, 2015 — Minebea Co., Ltd. (Minebea) and OSAKI Electric Co., Ltd. (OSAKI Electric) agreed to add and use electric power meter (smart meter) owned by OSAKI Electric, in the development of technology, which will be used for Phnom Penh Smart City Plan, where Minebea is now developing wireless technology, in Phnom Pen, the capital city of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

Minebea is currently undertaking the installation of approximately 9,000 high-efficiency smart LED street lights in five areas around Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat. The company plans to control the lights via a wireless network that will dim lighting automatically to enable significant reductions in energy consumption. The installation project is slated to be carried out within the framework of a Joint Credit Mechanism (JCM) established by the Ministry of the Environment Government of Japan. Minebea intends to promote the Smart City concept in Phnom Penh by enabling the street lights to also function as communication bases. As announced on October 22nd, Minebea has already agreed to jointly develop traffic control solution technology with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd., using information and communication technology (ICT).
Toward realization of the Smart City concept, OSAKI Electric will provide their various technologies related to electric power meter, and will jointly develop additional requisite technologies through close collaboration with Minebea. These companies will work toward building showcase for the most advanced Smart City in the world, combining state-of-the-art technologies of the three firms in Cambodia.

Minebea is the precision components manufacturer engaged in the machinery components business such as ball bearings and aircraft part, and electronic devices and components business including LED backlights used for smart phones, small-sized motors and sensors, etc. Minebea manufactures the miniature-sized ball bearings having the outer diameter of up to 22 mm in which the company has the largest global market share. On top of that, Minebea has kept trying to take new challenges and initiatives such as entering into the wireless communications business as well as the markets for lighting, and the like.

OSAKI Electric group is operating its business centering two business units, measurement control devices based on measurement control technology, and FPD-related devices based on fine-pitch implementation technology. On top of that, Osaki United International Pte. Ltd. became a subsidiary of OSAKI Electric in February 2012, and is now manufacturing and selling electric power meters in Oceania, Europe and Asia.

Going forward, Minebea and OSAKI Electric will apply their advanced technologies to the development of countries and regions throughout the world.
