ABLIC (President: Seiji Tanaka, Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter "ABLIC"), a group company of MinebeaMitsumi Inc., today launched the S-19954/5 Series of automotive step-down switching regulators.
Viewing cameras and sensing cameras are vital for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and AD (Autonomous Driving Systems), and with recent advances in technological innovation in automotive technologies, especially in the field of CASE (Connected, Autonomous, Shared & Services and Electrification), there has been an increase in both the number of these devices installed in automobiles and in the resolution of the devices installed.
However, higher resolution automotive cameras image sensors also have higher current consumption, which means that using conventional LDO regulators will increase heat generation. As such, switching regulators with high power conversion efficiency are often used as a solution to the heat problem, however the compared to LDO regulators, switching regulators require a greater number of peripheral components, which creates an additional problem of a larger required mounting area.
The new S-19954/5 Series launched today is a step-down switching regulator which operates at 5.5V with a 1A output and is housed in an HSNT-8(1616)B package (which is the industry's smallest package (*1) at 1.6 x 1.6 x t0.41mm). In addition, while the circuit configuration of conventional switching regulators required five or more external components, the S-19954/5 Series has an integrated feedback resistance circuit (*2) and phase compensation circuit (*3) to set output voltage, which makes it possible to configure an application circuit using just one small coil and two capacitors. These characteristics allow the S-19954/5 Series to achieve the industry's smallest mounting area (*4), a 45% reduction compared to conventional products, which in turn contributes to downsizing of camera modules.
The S-19954/5 Series is also equipped with a power good function to monitor the output voltage of the IC and ensure it stays within the normal range, so if the output voltage deviates from the specified range, the function raises an error flag to notify the microcontroller, which improves overall system safety.
The S-19954/5 Series is also PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) capable and planned for compliance with Grade 1 of the AEC (*)-Q100 (*Automotive Electronics Council) quality standard for automotive ICs.

Major Features

1. Features the industry's smallest ultra-compact package, and utilizes fewer peripheral components to achieve the industry's smallest mounting area

The S-19954/5 Series is a step-down switching regulator which operates at 5.5V with a 1A output housed in the industry's smallest (*1) HSNT-8(1616)B (1.6 x 1.6 x t0.41mm) package. This product contributes to downsizing of ECUs, which are being integrated into vehicles in ever-growing quantities. Also available in a gull-wing type HTMSOP-8 (2.9 x 4.0 x t0.8mm) (*5) package.
The S-19954/5 Series also has an integrated feedback resistance circuit and phase compensation circuit to set output voltage which allows for configuration of an application circuit with a minimum of just one small coil and two capacitors as peripheral components, and this reduction of components makes it possible to configure application circuits with the smallest mounting area in the industry.

2. Power Good function for improved system safety

The S-19954/5 Series has an integrated overcurrent protection circuit and thermal shutdown circuit in addition to a power good function that monitors output voltage, ensuring it stays within the normal range. The power good function improves system safety by raising an error flag to notify the microcontroller if the output voltage deviates from the specified range.

3. Industry's top class high efficiency

The S-19954/5 Series achieves higher efficiency conversion than products with similar functionality which places it in the industry's top class (95% at an input voltage of 4V and an output voltage of 3.3V).

4. Selectable PWM control or PWM/PFM control

Available with either PWM control (S-19954 Series) or PWM/PFM switching control (S-19955 Series). The S-19955 Series features a proprietary PWM/PFM switching technology with PFM control which is capable of delivering constant voltage output from VOUT without excessive ripple voltage. The release of the S-19954/5 Series has allowed us to expand our lineup of products which support downsizing and improved performance for automotive cameras to better satisfy customer demand.
