ABLIC (President: Seiji Tanaka, Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter "ABLIC"), a group company of MinebeaMitsumi Inc., today launched the S-19222 Series of automotive high-withstand voltage LDO linear regulator ICs.
An LDO linear regulator is an IC that controls output voltage in order to keep output voltage stable.
A variety of safety measures are implemented in order to ensure the realization of safe traffic infrastructure in light of the continuing electrification and increasing functionality of automobiles. One such safety measure is the control of vehicle operation according to detection of the vehicle itself and surrounding conditions by various sensors installed in the vehicle.
For example, torque sensors installed in EPS (*4) detect rotation of the steering wheel and output electric signals to power an electric motor that assists in the steering effort. The electric motor then assists in providing steering power in order to provide support for safer driving.
Because the torque sensor must be able to constantly collect accurate data and detect weak signals in real time in order to output electric signals, stable operation is an absolute requirement at all times; however, one issue is that external noise can interfere with accurate data collection. Large input and output capacitors could be used as a countermeasure to this noise in order to stabilize output voltage; however, this would also result in additional problems such as higher costs and larger footprint for the boards.
The S-19222 Series launched today has the industry's highest (*1) PSRR (*2) of 75dB (f=1kHz) which makes it highly capable of removing overlapping ripple noise in the input power supply in order to provide stable output voltage.
The S-19222 Series also features the industry's fastest (*3) transient response which makes it capable of providing stable voltage even in the event of major fluctuations in input voltage caused by cranking.
These features ensure stable operation even with smaller input and output capacitors making it possible to use smaller components at lower costs while also contributing to improvement of safety.
In addition, the S-19222 Series does not require the trade-off of higher current consumption normally required for high PSRR and fast transient response, but instead achieves lower current consumption and thereby contributes to lower standby current (*6) in ECUs (*5).

  • (*1, 3) It boasts 36V operation with a current consumption of 30µA or less as an LDO linear regulator IC. Based on our research as of September 2023
  • (*2) PSRR: An abbreviation for "Power Supply Rejection Ratio"
  • (*4) EPS: Electric Power Steering
  • (*5) ECU: Abbreviation for Electronic Control Unit. It is the generic term for automotive electronic control units. They are mainly used in automobiles. Currently, the majority of ECUs integrate microcontrollers.
  • (*6) Standby current: Quiescent current, or current that flows even when the ignition is turned OFF

Major Features

1. Industry's highest PSRR and low current consumption

The Series features the industry's highest PSRR of 75dB, typ. (f=1.0kHz) and a current consumption of only 22µA.
The high PSRR enables the Series to reduce overlapping ripple noise in the input power supply in order to contribute to more stable system operation. In addition, the IC input and output require fewer capacitors for connection, which contributes to lower costs. The low current consumption of 22.0µA during operation also contributes to lower standby current for the overall system.

2. Industry's fastest transient response

Installing a buffer circuit in the error amplifier output makes it possible to reduce overshoot and undershoot events caused by transient fluctuations in the power supply voltage to 1/60th that of conventional models and achieving the industry's fastest transient response.

A broad package lineup

3. A broad package lineup

We provide five packages including the industry standard SOT-23-5(2.9x2.8x51.3mm) as well as a high-heat dissipating TO-252-5S(A) (6.5x 6.5xt1.4mm) package in order to support the diverse variety of needs of automobile devices.

4. Automotive quality

These products have been subjected to the three-temperature test (low, normal and high temperature). According to the AEC (Automotive Electronics Council), this series will comply with AEC-Q100 Grade 0 reliability and quality test defined by the Council. They are also in compliance with the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP). This means these ICs are well suited for the harsh environment that automotive applications present.
