Factory Greening Award Program, commonly known as the "National Award for Greenery Factory," has been implemented every year since its establishment in 1982 to further promote the greening of factories by awarding plants, organizations, and individuals who have made outstanding achievements in promoting the greening of factories and improving the environments both inside and outside factories, based on the purpose of the Factory Location Act.

Reviews are conducted on the basis of the percentage of green space there is, the landscaping that has been done, and the maintenance and management being undertaken a factory site, as well as elements such as the state of local contributions made with respect to the environment, greening initiatives, and so on. Awards are given in stages, which include the Chair Person's Award of the Japan Greenery Research and Development Center, Director-General's Awards for each Regional Bureau of METI, the METI Minister's Award, and the Prime Minister's Award*.

MinebeaMitsumi's Hamamatsu Plant has been actively engaged in factory greening to facilitate the welfare of its employees and its coexistence with the local community since the beginning of its operation. The plant was awarded the Chair Person's Award of the Japan Greenery Research and Development Center in FY 2010 and the Director-General's Award of the Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry in FY 2018. On this occasion in FY 2023, the plant was awarded the METI Minister's Award.

The Hamamatsu Plant has an area of 148,578 m2 a green area of 71,048 m2. It's green area ratio is 46%, with 28,529 m2 consisting of natural groups of trees and planting area that is 40,019 m2 in size.

In the natural tree groups, there are broad-leaved trees, such as maples, crape myrtle trees, and oak trees that are upwards of eight meters in height, which are all arranged along the property line to surround the factory building. This creates harmony with the rich natural landscape of the vast forests, fields, and other natural environments found in the area surrounding the Hamamatsu Plant. There are also plants and flowers of various seasons, mainly bayberry shrubs, azaleas and cherry trees, found planted within the planting area, making for various kinds of green spaces that have been arranged in a balanced manner throughout the site.

This award is also a demonstration of the appreciation of our efforts to reduce power consumption in the production process and reduce carbon dioxide emissions at the Hamamatsu Plant.

At the MinebeaMitsumi Hamamatsu Plant, we will continue to promote planting, the management of lawns and trees to maintain the natural landscape, promote initiatives aimed at bringing to fruition a sustainable global environment, and focus on creating indispensable parts and generating new value for our markets and customers.

* The Chair Person's Award of the Japan Greenery Research and Development Center, the Director-General's Awards for each Regional Bureau of METI, and the METI Minister's Award are sponsored by the Japan Greenery Research and Development Center. The Prime Minister's Award is sponsored by the Forestry Agency.

About MinebeaMitsumi Hamamatsu Plant

MinebeaMitsumi Hamamatsu Plant

The MinebeaMitsumi Hamamatsu Plant was established in 1986 in Asaba-cho, Iwata-gun, Shizuoka Prefecture (currently Fukuroi City) as the R&D Center of Minebea Co., Ltd. At the time of its establishment, its main products (with mechanical products such as bearings, Minebea's original business at its founding, serving as the core), were electronic devices such as magnetic heads and PM-type stepping motors used in FDDs, which were the mainstream external storage devices for PCs at that time. Currently, as the mother factory for MinebeaMitsumi's electronic devices business, which involves various motors and lighting products represented in its Smart City Solutions, the plant conducts operations such as research and development for new products and technologies, support for plants related to business overseas, and employee training for overseas manufacturing sites.
